How to Take Your Teak to the Dark Side
A few honest truths before you start: the finish is only ever as good as the preparation. Skip a step here and you'll see every shortcut for the next five years. Take your time.
Clean thoroughly first. Every speck of old finish, mildew, and surface dirt has to go. (Here's our full guide to preparing outdoor furniture →)
Let it dry completely. Damp timber and stain don't mix. Give it a full sunny day, longer if it's humid.
Brush away every trace of sawdust. A clean cloth or a vacuum brush attachment does the job.
Either use Rubio Sunprimer Black and Hybrid Wood protector or Goden care.
Shake your Golden Care Teak Protector in Coffee Brown — upside down, for a full minute. Pigment sits at the bottom, and you need it suspended.Apply with a clean cloth, always along the grain. Smooth, even strokes.
Less is more. Multiple thin coats beat one heavy coat every time. Heavy coats blotch. Thin coats build depth.
Catch drips and runs immediately — once it dries you're sanding it back.
Keep layering until you've reached the depth of colour you want. Two to four coats typically lands you in the rich, even black-brown sweet spot.
Seal with two coats of Golden Care Teak Shield. This is what keeps the colour locked in and the timber protected through Brisbane summers and southerly winters alike.
